Learn about the various types of concrete admixtures
Know about Admixtures
A concrete mix includes the addition of additives to improve the performance of the fresh concrete by adding special ingredients during the mixing process. In the construction industry, there is a wide variety of admixtures that can be used for various purposes.
Basic Functions of Admixtures in construction
Listed below are a few basic functions of Admixtures in construction:-
- In concrete mixing admixtures are used to speed up or slow down the setting time of fresh concrete, depending on the application.
- The addition of admixtures to concrete can improve its workability or flowability
- Additionally, concrete can also be made stronger and more durable by incorporating admixtures.
- In addition to this, the use of admixtures can also reduce the heat produced during the hydration process.
- There is also a reduction in bleeding and segregation due to the use of admixtures.
- Additionally, the permeability of the mixture can be decreased by the addition of admixtures.
- Many other desired properties can be achieved by combining admixtures with concrete.
Various Kinds of Admixtures in concrete
Water Reducing Admixture types
The name of a water-reducing admixture is self-explanatory; it means that it is used to reduce the amount of water that is required when mixing concrete. In addition to its workability, concrete has a number of other properties that can be improved with the addition of water, however, if water is added in excess of what is required, its strength and durability will be affected. This increases workability as well as makes concrete stronger, prevents cracking, segregation, honeycombing, bleeding, and extends the life of concrete and steel.
Retarding Admixtures type
Concrete set-up time is increased when retarding admixtures are used because they do not speed up the hydration of cement during the initial stages and therefore deter the hydration. In areas where there is a high level of temperature, these retarders are often used to prevent concrete from setting quickly in those zones. Depending on the circumstances, the fast setting of concrete may result in discontinuities in the structure, voids will be created in concrete because of poor bonding between the surfaces, etc.
Accelerating admixtures type
An accelerating admixture is a chemical agent that can be added to concrete to reduce its initial setting time. This is due to the fact that they accelerate the process of hardening concrete at the initial stage, which is why they are also referred to as accelerators. The accelerators also increase the rate of hydration of the concrete in the early stages of its construction, enhancing the strength of the concrete.
Pozzolanic Admixture tye
In order to prepare dense concrete mixes, pozzolanic admixtures are generally used. This is the most suitable mix to be used for structures that retain water, such as dams, reservoirs, etc. Furthermore, thermal shrinkage and the heat of hydration are also reduced by these additives. There is no doubt that using the best pozzolanic materials in the right quantity gives the best results and helps to avoid or reduce many risks such as alkali aggregate reactions, leaching, and sulfate attacks among others.
Gas Forming Admixtures type
There are two basic types of chemical additives that are used in gas-forming processes: aluminum powder-activated carbon and hydrogen peroxide. A gas-forming admixture is added to the concrete mix to stimulate the reaction between the hydrogen gas formed in the concrete and the hydroxide that is formed by the hydration of cement.
Damp-proofing Admixture type
Waterproof admixtures are used in concrete structures to make them impervious to water and to prevent the concrete from becoming damp as a result of moisture. It should be noted that they not only possess water-proof properties, but they also act as accelerators in the very early stages of concrete hardening. In addition to the liquid form, powder form, paste form, etc., damp proofing admixtures are also available in powder form.
Anit-washout Admixtures type
There are a variety of admixtures that are used in concrete as anti-washout agents, especially for underwater concrete structures. Underwater pressure, the concrete mix is protected from being washed out by the water pressure at the bottom. This increases the cohesiveness of concrete and makes it easier to work with. As an example, natural rubbers and synthetic rubbers are used to prepare this type of admixture, whilst thickeners based on cellulose are often used.
Benefits of using admixtures in concrete
Listed below are a few benefits of using Admixtures for concrete:-
- Concrete is being placed at a faster rate than before by using these admixtures.
- Among the benefits it brings are an improvement in strength, durability, density, and so on.
- In concrete, it lowers the segregation, permeability, as well as cracking.
