Fundamental Materials used for Concrete
At its easiest , concrete is a blender of glue (cement, water, and air) putting it together fillers (aggregate) . Nevertheless, other materials, such as supplementary cementations materials (SCMs) and chemical admixtures, are builded to the blended. During pavement construction, dowel bars, tie bars, and reinforcement may be added to the system, and curing compounds are applied to the concrete surface. All these materials influence the way concrete acts on in both its fresh and hardened states. This article discusses each material in turn-why it is used, how it influences concrete, and the standard specifications that govern its use.
Hydraulic Cement
Hydraulic cement is a material that settles and solidify when it comes in contact with water through a synthetic retort called hydration, and it has the ability of doing so under water. Hydration is a no reversible chemical reaction. It results in hydrated cement paste, a powerful, stiff matter. Portland cement, calcium aluminate cement, some fly ash-based cements, and calcium sulfoaluminate cements which include in hydraulic cements.
Portland cement is used for normal construction and repair, while the other types of cement are used for special cases, such as repair or for pavements where fast turnaround times are critical . Hydraulic cements are also manufactured, pre-mixed with ground calcium carbonate and are referred to as blended cements.
Blended Cements
Blended cements are manufactured by grinding or blending portland cement together with SCMs such as fly ash, slag cement, or another pozzolan , or by mincing with limestone or mixturing with ground calcium carbonate.
Blended cements are used in all aspects of concrete construction in the same implementation as portland cements. Like portland cements, blended cements can be the only cementations material in concrete, or they can be used in combination with other SCMs added at the concrete plant.
